  Unwavering pride in supporting the N700S Shinkansen

  I handle the welding and assembly of critical parts such as the traction motor cooling ducts for the N700S Shinkansen. Cracks caused by vibration during operation could be fatal, so I take extra care with weld penetration. I feel the pride of a craftsman when I look at my hands--- the hands that painstakingly check there aren't any bead cracks or pinholes. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing trains fitted with parts I made racing across Japan.

  The Head Office Plant is full of seniors far more experienced than I am, and they never fail to share advice and concrete tips to help me work more efficiently. I can take on extremely difficult welding challenges with confidence because I know my colleagues will always back me up. Narita is a place where you can hone your skills and grow every day.

  The command center of manufacturing, linking worksites with the office

  As a scheduling coordinator, I create everything from six-month master schedules to detailed process charts, and even handle parts staging at the manufacturing sites myself. It's not mere desk work — I spend half of each day out on the floor checking progress. I'm a "manager on the move." Aside preparing documents accurately, I also value face-to-face communication above all as that enables seamless manufacturing.
  

  Bonds forged meeting a deadline as a team

  A few years ago we faced a huge crisis, with an enormous workload putting a deadline at risk — but everyone from sales and manufacturing to logistics pulled together to recover from the delay and meet the customer's requirements. I still haven't forgotten the gratitude I felt then. I have been blessed with great bosses and colleagues; we each work on our own pace but help one another when in need. Warm relationships like these are the source of Narita Manufacturing's strength.

  A global perspective developed during my 6 year-assignment in the U.S.

  Being seconded to the U.S. for about six years and working face to face with local team members was a priceless experience for me. At first I struggled, unable to speak English fluently. But through sheer persistence in communication, I built trust that crossed borders. I now oversee the production of doors, gangway bellows, and other products for conventional lines and Shinkansen at the Mito Plant. I've recognized that the adaptability and courage I gained overseas are now the foundation of my work today.
  

  Spotting "invisible defects" in aluminum welding

  What I care most about is aluminum welding — deceptively simple, yet endlessly deep discipline. As a professional, finishing with a clean appearance is a condition that needn't be said here. However, what we pursue is 'true quality' with zero weld defects. At our company, everyone works together to understand and resolve an issue should it arise. My superior and seniors are always friendly and open to questions, allowing me to focus on high quality manufacturing.

  Overcoming language barriers to raise the next generation of craftsmen

  In addition to making gangway bellows for rolling stock, I also have the role of training international staff from outside the company. Training staff without a fully shared language takes patience and is a lot of hard work. But seeing them learn to read drawings and master skills is a great joy. Our department consists of lively, cheerful members from diverse backgrounds, and we share the fun of manufacturing every day.
  

  Gangway bellows that embody 'Narita quality'

  Driven by a determination not to be beaten by any company on quality, I thoroughly perform my daily confirmation tasks. Narita gangway bellows are used on railways all over Japan, and when I happen to spot one while traveling, my heart swells. I'm happy to see that something I made is supporting someone's journey. I'd like to pass down this craftsman's spirit of "being meticulous over every detail" to the next generation.

  A welding-competition medalist takes on new ground

  I previously spent more than ten years on aluminum welding for motorcycle parts, refining my skills to the point of winning awards at technical competitions. Now I work on interior panels for the Shinkansen, drawing on that long experience to search for ways to work efficiently without yielding any defects. Every time I see a motorcycle or Shinkansen carrying parts I made, I feel deep gratitude toward the end users welling up inside me.
  

  Quietly and deeply, at a plant with a small group of elites

  The Mito Minami Plant runs on a small team that is a little shy of 20 employees. I love how it's so quiet you can immerse yourself in work. I was once entrusted with great responsibilities of launching a new line, and the sense of achievement I felt when I was able to pull it off with help from my boss and teammates was exceptional. At times, we need to be tough on each other when it comes to safety and quality, but that's all because we want to grow together. For anyone who wants to work with a small team at one place, the Mito Minami Plant would be the best environment for you.

  Turning "poor drawing skills" into a strength

  I was assigned to the production engineering section despite being devastatingly poor at math and geometry. But thanks to everyone's patient guidance, I can now spot flaws in drawings. Because I had struggled myself, I understand which points the manufacturing team finds confusing. By creating working drawings and specifications that can be understood by all, I prevent defects before they emerge and strongly support the downstream manufacturing processes.
  

  A great team built on understanding of shorter working hours

  Our department is a very relaxed organization. The section manager as well as all members are sincere and kind. I've worked shortened hours for years, and no one has ever begrudged it — on the contrary, they support me attentively. Everyone is always busy, but they are always willing to answer me whenever I have any questions. This warmth is the biggest reason I'm glad I leapt into the world of drawings which I once found so daunting.

  A guardian of safety with scrutinizing eyes

  As a quality control assistant, I inspect the appearance and dimensions of railway and motorcycle parts. Because these parts are directly tied to safety, even the slightest scratch or deviation in shape cannot be overlooked. And I believe I have the concentration and eyes to catch them. When I told my child, 'My company makes train doors,' I felt anew — and with pride — that my everyday work is strongly connected to society's safety.
  

  Colleagues' kind support for my return from maternity leave

  Right after returning from my leave, I had a difficult time until I got used to the new procedures. I was saved by the warm support that everyone provided me with. Now I can juggle work and childcare while devoting myself to my daily duties. At Narita Manufacturing, there is always someone to help you out when you need advice or assistance, giving you psychological safety and the feeling of wanting to serve the company for a long time. I feel I can always perform my best even if I enter a different life stage.

  The point of contact supporting the NY subway project

  As a salesperson, I serve as the point of contact between customers and the company, taking on very challenging projects such as launching a door program for overseas rolling stock. Overseas projects involve many adjustments that differ from domestic standards, which was tough — but I'll never forget the joy when our doors were adopted as the standard product. Seeing products we worked on become a topic on social media, or running through cities around the world, is a thrill unique to this job.
  

  Trust and teamwork connected by smiles

  As the face of the company, I make effort to respond with a smile no matter what as good impression builds trust and creates smoother coordination, both within and outside the company. Our department is very open, and I can consult my boss without hesitation. On weekends, we go golfing or out for meals together. Both on and off the job, my colleagues and I inspire each other, making each day enjoyable.
